The pride of St Augustine is the Castillo de San Marcos built
by the Spanish from coquina rock between 1672 and 1695. The Castillo has never been taken
by military force, although it has changed hands several times. The United States
purchased Florida in 1821. The Castillo was designated a National Monument in 1924.
